Annual Report

Co-chairs:
Eve Colson, Yale
Terry Kind, Children’s National / GW
Linda Tewksbury, NYU

SIG purpose/mission:
The purpose of the qualitative research SIG is to bring people from all levels of experience and from different disciplines together learn how to make effective use of qualitative research methods.

Current SIG goals:

  1. To build skills in qualitative research methods among SIG members
  2. To bring together researchers and educators from different disciplines to learn about and build expertise in qualitative research methods.
  3. To build a cadre of qualitative researchers who can serve as a resource to the Academic Pediatrics Association and as mentors to APA members.

Annual summary:
At the annual PAS meeting in San Francisco in 2017 we were thrilled to team up with the Medical Student Education SIG for a combined session. We had a lively icebreaker where we counted the syllables in our names and then described the meanings of our names.  Through brief didactics and small group activities we focused on how qualitative research can enhance medical education projects.  Participants developed qualitative research questions and did a coding exercise.

We wrapped up with a short business meeting where we thanked thank Eve Colson for her many years of service to the SIG from its very inception, and look forward to her and other past chair’s (Jan Hanson and Dorene Balmer) ongoing guidance to help with the above goals.  We are pleased to welcome Caroline Paul as new co-chair.

Other groups:  Qualitative methodology spans many groups, is applicable to COMSEP, APPD, and other SIGS who could benefit from this type of research.

April 2017 Newsletter Article

We are pleased to announce a joint meeting of the Qualitative Research SIG and the Medical Student Education SIG at PAS, to bring together researchers and educators with a focus on medical student education related research questions. This combined SIG will be on Sat May 6, 2017 at 8:30am in the Sierra Suite H at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco. Practical examples from the medical student education literature that employ qualitative research methods will be used to provide background. Participants are welcome to bring their ideas and works in progress for work in facilitated small groups to share areas that participants are pondering or struggling with as well as possible ways to address the struggles. We offer skill building stations for participants to gain experience: 1) developing research questions pertaining to key topics in medical student education that can be answered through qualitative research methods, and 2) hands-on experience in analysis (introduction to coding).
