It's that time of year again: preparing for PAS! Below are a few updates before we see each other in San Francisco.

Maryellen, Sue and I have been crisscrossing the country to attend Regional Meetings. The enthusiasm and collaboration we observed, especially among junior and senior members as well as among institutions bodes well for the future of the APA!

Speaking of the future and beginning with your input through the "Value of the APA" survey last summer, the APA Board has been working over the past nine months to develop APA's 2017-2022 Strategic Plan. The plan in addition to a new mission, vision and core values is featured in this Newsletter. WE CHANGED OUR MISSION TO FOCUS ON YOUR SUCCESS!

Our New Mission:
The Academic Pediatric Association nurtures the academic success and career development of child health professionals engaged in research, advocacy, improvement science and educational scholarship to enhance the health and well-being of all children.

We have 4 GOALS with strategies that will advance our mission:

  1. Be the academic home for child health care professionals by being the premier source for career development
    • Formalize/organize an approach to academic professional development
    • Develop an online learning strategy
    • Strengthen and expand opportunities for mentoring and networking among members
    • Promote internal leadership and engagement opportunities

  2. Increase member diversity and engagement
    • Develop a staff-driven, robust communication strategy, tools and guiding principles to keep members informed and engaged

  3. Advance an equitable child health agenda
    • Focus advocacy efforts on socially and economically disadvantaged children
    • Elevate and apply an academic approach to translating how evidence informs policy
    • Collaborate and partner with the Pediatric Policy Council and other child health organizations to ensure APA's mission and vision are represented

  4. Build an effective infrastructure and secure the necessary staff, technology and financial resources to support our mission.
    • Explore new governance structures to separate strategy from operations
    • Define and delineate volunteer and staff roles for efficiency and effectiveness
    • Invest in staff and professional expertise to support and advance the efforts of the organization
    • Explore efficiencies in both technology and processes
    • Improve and enhance internal communications

Whether you can join us in San Francisco or not I would like to ask you to think about how you can help advance our mission and achieve our goals. At PAS I am going to ask each Region, SIG and Committee to determine and commit to 1-3 tactics that align with our goals to work on over the next year that will help contribute to our collaborative success. After PAS, we will share the committed tactics across the organization to encourage collaboration, engagement and accountability.

Speaking of engagement, you do not want to miss the APA Membership Meeting on Sunday, May 7 from 3:45 pm - 5:45 pm in the San Francisco Marriott Marquis! We will have a new "Speed Learning" event this year to facilitate enjoyable networking and collaboration with colleagues throughout our regions, SIGs, committees and core programs. I guarantee you will meet new colleagues, learn how the APA can support you, learn how you can get involved and have fun!

We will also be piloting a new format for the Presidential Plenary on Monday, May 8 from 1:30 pm -5:15 pm with audience participation, social media and music - to keep you engaged while learning about cutting edge research.

SAVE THE DATE: 2nd Annual APA Pediatric Academic Generalist & Hospital Medicine Fellows' Conference

Thursday, May 4, 2017 in San Francisco, California from 1:30-7:00 pm

We are seeking fellows, particularly those from APA-accredited Academic General Pediatric (AGP) and Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellowships to attend a half day national fellows' conference on Thursday, May 4, 2017 in San Francisco, CA (immediately before the PAS meeting). This conference is designed for all pediatric fellows interested in enhancing their academic career skills and building strong collaborative networks with other academic fellows and faculty. There is no registration fee for this conference as it is hosted by the APA's Education Committee through the Academic General Pediatrics Accreditation Committee (AGPAC)

AGP fellows will have the opportunity to:

  • Obtain feedback from AGP leaders on their advocacy, quality improvement, education, or research projects?
  • Find like-minding individuals for networking and collaboration?
  • Identify and practice strategies to be a more effective academician

All trainees who are fellows within APA accredited training programs will receive a $200 voucher at the meeting to offset the hotel costs of attending the meeting.

APA Teaching Program Award and the APA Annual Teaching Award for Junior and Mid-Career Faculty

The APA Education Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the following national awards

 The APA Teaching Program Award:  Urban Health and Advocacy Track, Boston Combined Residency Program (BCRP).  Boston Children's Hospital.  Team Members:  Scott Hadland, MD, MPH, Kate Michelson, MD, MMSC, Christine Cheston, MD, Ted Sectish, MD, Bob Vinci, MD, and the entire BCRP Leadership Team.

The Urban Health and Advocacy Track (UHAT) of Boston Combined Residency Program devotes ample resources to the training of its pediatric residents with the goal of cultivating a community of diverse pediatricians focused on caring for underserved and marginalized children. UHAT residents believe that reducing health disparities is central to their lives as pediatricians, whether in primary care, subspecialty, or acute settings. The scholarly output of the program is quite Impressive and includes publications and presentations in prestigious conferences. Innovative teaching models and a streamlined funding allows residents to fully foster their interests in public health, health policy, advocacy, general academic pediatrics, community pediatrics, and global health and become nationally recognized leaders in these areas.  The Urban Health and Advocacy Track (UHAT) of Boston Combined Residency Program can become a model for the development of similar programs around the country. The committee is pleased to recognize such a special and impactful program!

The APA Annual Teaching Award - Mid-level Faculty:  Michele Etterbeek Long, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Director, UCSF Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum (EPAC), University of California, San Francisco
Michele Long
Michele Long is known in the pediatric education community for her enthusiasm for teaching and for her support and engagement of learners across the continuum and across disciplines. She is passionate as a patient-centered teacher who focuses on reflection and empowerment, highlighting teachable moments with her learners.   She has committed her scholarly career to collaborative projects that support all interested in medical education, having published articles on effective teaching and presented countless workshops for peers. For Dr. Long, mentorship is a priority, and she consistently helps peers and learners achieve scholarly goals related to their individual passions.   Michele is a graduate of the APA Educational Scholars Program, and in 2016 she was inducted into UCSF's Academy of Medical Educators.  She is active at the national level as a COMSEP curriculum Task force Co-Leader, and is the director of the AAMC-sponsored EPAC Pilot Project at UCSF, which is focused on developing a pediatric training pathway that spans the UME-GME continuum and follows a competency-based Core EPA framework.  Michele has built a career on not only educating learners, but also on changing how we educate learners and faculty. She co-created the AAP, APA sponsored national Advancing Pediatric Educator eXcellence (APEX) Teaching Program for pediatric hospitalists. She is truly a remarkable individual who has made a significant impact on medical education across the country.

The APA Annual Teaching Award - Junior Faculty:  Elizabeth Reed Hanson, MD, MA, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Associate Program Director, Pediatric Residency Program, Interim Director of Pre-Clinical Education, UT Health San Antonio School of Medicine
Liz Hanson
Dr. Liz Hanson, the recipient of the 2017 APA Teaching Award for Junior Faculty is a thoughtful and dedicated educator.  As a general pediatrician with a strong background in the basic sciences, she has worked to understand the interplay between social determinants and basic biomedical underpinnings of health.  It is this complex understanding that Dr. Hanson strives to bring to her learners. Nothing brings Dr. Hanson more joy then to see that light go on in their eyes when they are able to bring the pieces together and glimpse at that whole picture of what it means to be a physician who truly promotes health in their patients and community.  Dr. Hanson is very involved in teaching at the University of Texas Health San Antonio School of Medicine (Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program, Module Co-Director for the MS1 Molecules to Medicine Course, Interim Director of the Pre-Clinical Curriculum). She is also active at the national level and has taken a leading role in the development of a new National Child Poverty Curriculum through her work in the Education Subcommittee of the APA Child Poverty Taskforce.

The Faculty Development SIG is soliciting members interested in serving as a new Faculty Development SIG co-chair. Teaching Tip.  Using "Think-Time" instead of "Wait Time."
In reviewing the educational literature, I came across the concept of "think-time."  The construct was proposed by Stahl (1985) to better label the importance of giving students and trainees distinct periods of uninterrupted silence (3-5 seconds) so that there is time for processing information, feelings, and actions.  I agree with Stahl in the preference of the term "think-time" instead of "wait-time" as it names the primary academic purpose of the activity of this period of silence.   Try counting to at least three in your mind (one mis-sis-sip-pi, two mis-sis-sip-pi, etc.) before repeating the question or rewording it.  When you ask Higher-order questions that require more thought than the simple recall questions, extend your wait time from 3 seconds to 6 to 10 seconds.  The advantages of "think-times" are numerous.  "For example, when students are given 3 or more seconds of undisturbed "wait-time," there are certain positive outcomes:

  • The length and correctness of their responses increase.
  • The number of their "I don't know" and no answer responses decreases.
  • The number of volunteered, appropriate answers by larger numbers of students greatly increases.
  • The scores of students on academic achievement tests tend to increase.
  • When teachers wait patiently in silence for 3 or more seconds at appropriate places, positive changes in their own teacher behaviors also occur:
  • Their questioning strategies tend to be more varied and flexible.
  • They decrease the quantity and increase the quality and variety of their questions.
  • They ask additional questions that require more complex information processing and higher-level thinking on the part of students."

Web application for Teaching:  Nearpod (https://nearpod.com/)
The Nearpod platform enables teachers to use their Tablet to manage content on students' mobile devices. It combines presentation, collaboration, and real-time assessment tools into one integrated solution. Nearpod allows teachers to:

  • Create Content: - Teachers log in to www.nearpod.com to create multimedia presentations with interactive features such as quizzes, videos, polls, drawing tools, and more. They can also access featured presentations from certified publishers and fellow educators.
  • Engage: - In the classroom, teachers log in to the Nearpod app to share content with their students and manage the flow of the lecture. Students use the Nearpod app on their devices to receive curricular content, participate in activities and submit responses.
  • Assess: - Teachers can see students' answers in real time on the Nearpod app. Additionally, teachers can log in to www.nearpod.com to access post-session data and obtain detailed activity reports.

Project Updates

In Progress: Current Practices for Identifying and Addressing Social Determinants of Health in Continuity Clinic
The purpose of this study is to describe current residency education and continuity clinic screening practices targeting social determinants of health.  Through this study, we are seeking to survey individual continuity clinic sites in CORNET.  The survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and each respondent will receive a $25 Amazon gift card as an acknowledgement for their time.

In Progress: National Immunization Partnership with the APA (NIPA)
This large-scale, quality improvement project coaches clinical sites through practice changes in order to increase adolescent HPV vaccination rates and limit missed opportunities for HPV vaccination at every clinic visit. 

Faculty who meet minimum participation requirements will receive MOC 4 credit.  Moreover, we are excited that we will be able to offer banked MOC credit for residents as well.

We are preparing abstracts based on Wave 1 and are finalizing data analysis of Wave 2.  In March, we entered the implementation phase of Wave 3 with 14 participating CORNET sites.

CORNET Presentations

CORNET members will be presented a workshop at the APA Region II/III Meeting on March 24th at NYU, entitled, "Partnering with parent navigators to meet your care coordination/PCMH needs and promote community-engaged research."  The purpose of this workshop was to encourage collaboration between continuity clinics and local parent partners to advocate for and improve healthcare and health outcomes for children with special healthcare needs.

Educational Scholars Program

The Educational Scholars Program celebrated its tenth birthday last May, and this year we are welcoming a new Director to the program! I am delighted to announce that Melissa Klein, MD MEd, has accepted our offer to lead the ESP! She is richly qualified, and has many exciting plans for expanding the activities of the program, particularly in the area of educational research collaborations. She will assume the directorship at the PAS, beginning a year of transition in which she and the current director, Connie Baldwin, will share leadership roles while Melissa learns how our complex program operates.

For those who don't yet know her, Melissa is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of General and Community Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati. She is currently Associate Residency Program Director, Director of the General Pediatric Master Educator Fellowship, and Co-Director of the Masters of Education program.  She is a stellar graduate of the ESP from our second cohort. Her ESP project studied the impact of an educational intervention for interns to improve their assessment of family social and economic factors, and she has gone on to create a simulation curriculum for residents on screening families for social determinants of health. In the APA, Melissa is a sought-after mentor and faculty advisor to ESP scholars, a curriculum development leader for the Child Poverty Task Force, and Associate Editor for Education for the APA journal, Academic Pediatrics.  She is well published and well-funded, and mentors many trainees and young faculty. She has demonstrated energy, dedication, and exceptional leadership in her career, winning an impressive array of teaching and advocacy awards. Please join me in welcoming Melissa as the leader of our esteemed community of scholars! We all have high expectations for the future of the program!

The next recruitment year for the ESP will be 2018. The application website will open on June 1, 2018, and the deadline for completion will be September 1. In the future, our recruitment cycles will occur every 3 years, instead of in 2 out of 3 years, and we will accept 30 scholars in a single cohort, rather than 25 scholars in each of 2 simultaneous cohorts. These changes will make the program easier to manage and allow us to focus more faculty effort on individual scholars.

Even though scholar numbers will be reduced, we will be expanding faculty participation with more opportunities for mentoring/advising, teaching and program-related research.  For example, our faculty will be offering consultations to future applicants who are developing ESP project proposals, beginning at PAS in 2018. We want to give our scholars a head start on planning a high quality project with excellent prospects for completion within 3 years of program enrollment.  We will also be giving ESP-sponsored workshops on educational scholarship, to create a more fertile ground for academic excellence across the pediatric educational community. We believe that these planned changes will make the ESP more rewarding for scholars, alumni and faculty alike.

LATEST NEWS: APA RESEARCH IN ACADEMIC PEDIATRICS INITIATIVE ON DIVERSITY (RAPID), SPONSORED BY NIDDK

2017 APA RAPID Scholars Selected

The APA is delighted to announce the selection of the 2017 class of Scholars for the APA Research in Academic Pediatrics Initiative on Diversity (RAPID), sponsored by the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

RAPID's goal is to recruit, retain, and provide career development and advancement for diverse junior faculty in general academic pediatrics pursuing careers in NIDDK mission areas. RAPID targets applicants who are underrepresented minorities, disabled, or from a socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged background. The program, which includes both a research project and career development activities, consists of: 1) research grants of up to $15,000 for projects in NIDDK mission areas (pediatric obesity, nutrition, and/or sickle cell disease); 2) pairing of the RAPID scholar with a national mentor who is an accomplished senior investigator and seasoned mentor; 3) in-person mentoring and networking at an annual breakfast at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting; 4) an annual Conference on career development and academic success, including mentoring and networking with leading researchers; and 5) RAPID Scholar telephone conference calls every two months, to provide peer support, peer mentoring, networking, a venue for presenting research in progress, and opportunities for potential research collaborations. RAPID in the News

RAPID Scholars have accrued a number of superb accomplishments in the past year. These include:
Cristina Fernández, 2015 RAPID Scholar, will present findings from her RAPID project, "Food, Energy, and Housing Insecurities and Adverse Child Behavior and Health," in the prestigious AAP Presidential Plenary session at PAS 2017 in San Francisco. Presidential plenaries are presented to the very highest scoring abstracts of all submitted to the PAS, making this a tremendous accomplishment for Dr. Fernández.

Thao-Ly Phan, 2014 RAPID Scholar, will present her RAPID project abstract, "Impact of Psychosocial Risk on Attrition and Weight Outcomes Among Families Seeking Treatment for Obesity," as a platform presentation in the "Obesity and Disordered Eating: Novel Approaches to Reducing Risk and Improving Outcomes in Pediatric Obesity" session at PAS 2017 in San Francisco.

Jennifer Woo Baidal, 2014 RAPID Scholar, is the recipient of the prestigious and highly competitive four-year Robert Wood Johnson Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Award (AMFDP) for her proposal, "Applying Non-Invasive Technologies to Diagnose Pediatric Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease." AMFDP was created to increase the number of faculty from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who can achieve senior rank in academic medicine, dentistry, or nursing, and who will encourage and foster the development of succeeding classes of such physicians, dentists, and nurse-scientists.

Thao Ly-Phan, 2014 RAPID Scholar, received an NICHD K23 Career Development Award in 2016 for her proposal, "Integrating Parenting Interventions into Pediatric Obesity Care." With this grant, Dr. Ly-Phan will develop an intervention consisting of brief, tailored, culturally sensitive videos to provide guidance on the use of evidence-based parenting techniques for managing a child's obesity-related behaviors.

Suzanna Martinez, 2014 RAPID Scholar, received an NHLBI K01 Career Development Award in 2016 for her proposal, "Sleep Duration and Risk for Obesity in Mexican American Children." Dr. Martinez will examine behavioral mechanisms that link sleep duration to obesity, data that will be used to plan a randomized, controlled trial of an intervention to promote optimal healthy eating and physical activity among Mexican-American children.
Juan Espinoza, 2015 RAPID Scholar, in addition to spearheading an outstanding initiative to increase RAPID's on-line footprint and social media presence, received an APA Research Scholars Award.

Attendees of the 2015 Annual RAPID Career Development Conference co-authored a recent article in the December 2016 issue of the International Journal for Equity in Health entitled "Hot topics, urgent priorities, and ensuring success for racial/ethnic minority young investigators in academic pediatrics." APA RAPID Holds Fourth Annual Mentoring and Career Development Conference

RAPID held its fourth Annual Conference in Grapevine, Texas, on January 18-19, 2017. This exciting conference included a panel discussion on keys to success for young investigators, a speed-mentoring session, a reception and dinner, a keynote speech by Dr. Fernando Mendoza, research presentations by the 2016 RAPID Scholars, one-on-one mentoring sessions, and a hot-topic presentation and discussion, led by the young investigators. In addition to the two 2016 RAPID Scholars, conference attendees included 12 additional talented and accomplished young investigators (including residents, fellows, and faculty) from across the country chosen by the RAPID NAC from a strong application pool of candidates. Regions
Region II/III

Over 120 attendees took part in the annual APA Region II/III meeting on Friday, March 24, 2017!  This joint Region II/III meeting was held at the NYU School of Medicine / NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, NY.  Attendees were welcomed with opening remarks by Arthur Fierman, MD, Director, Division of General Pediatrics at the NYU School of Medicine.  Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, MPH, Director of the Pediatric Public Health Initiative at the Hurley Children's Hospital at Hurley Medical Center, and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, gave an inspirational key note address on "The Flint Water Crisis: A Journey for Justice". We were all inspired by her development of an innovative and model public health program to research, monitor and mitigate the impact of lead in Flint's drinking water. Participants were able to choose from three workshops: "Partnering with Parent Navigators: Improving Care and Promoting Community Engaged Research" (led by Susan Feigelman, MD, Lin Perry, MPA, Ann Phillips, Iman Sharif, MD, MPH and Hollyce Tyrrell, MSSW), "Management of Adolescent Depression in Primary Care: Tips and Pearls" (led by Diane Bloomfield, MD, and Ruth E. K. Stein, MD), and "The Whys and Hows to Address Burnout" (led by Michael J Beck, MD, FAAP, SSGB and Chris O'Hara, MD).  There were 32 posters on display during the poster session.  The lunchtime networking session was led by a group of 10 esteemed mentors, including Michael Beck, MD, Susan Bostwick, MD, MBA, Esther Chung MD, MPH, Arthur Fierman, MD, Alan Mendelsohn, MD, Suzette Oyeku, MD, MPH, Lee Pachter, DO, Ian Paul, MD, MSc, Iman Sharif, MD, MS, MPH, and Steven Shelov, MD, with topics at tables spanning advocacy, medical education, and funding opportunities for early stage investigators.  At the Business meeting, Susan Bostwick, MD, MBA, APA President-elect, gave a brief update and overview about what is going on in the APA.  The day concluded with a platform session composed of 8 outstanding presentations.   

We are looking forward to seeing Region II members at the upcoming PAS meeting in San Francisco! Our APA Region II breakfast will be held Monday, May 8th from 7-8 am in Yerba Buena Salon 2 at the Marriott Marquis.

Note that this is the last year of the 3 year term for the current Region II co-chairs.  We welcome the new Region II Chairs, Katie McPeak, MD, and John C. Rausch, MD, MPH, who are starting in May 2017; they will be joined by Melissa Cellini, MD, MSEd in May 2018.

Region IV

Dear Region IV members,

Another successful regional meeting is on the books! We had record attendance this year as folks from all over the region made the journey to Charlottesville in February. The mild weather encouraged many to explore Downtown Charlottesville and its ever-expanding dining and cultural offerings. Meeting attendees enjoyed the chance to network with colleagues. Old friendships were rekindled and new ones formed. We were happy to see a strong showing from fellows and residents as well as medical students and research coordinators. It was great to see such enthusiasm and excitement during plenary and poster presentations. We had 15 Platform Presentations and a lively Poster Session with 30 posters.

Karen Remley, CEO of the AAP, gave an inspiring Keynote address titled "A Mission for Children: AAP's Blueprint for the New Political Environment." She reminded us, as pediatricians, to speak up and advocate for the needs of all children. We had a fantastic National APA update this year from Mary Ottolini who discussed national priorities for the organization. The Meet the Professor Breakfast offered a variety of mentoring opportunities in small groups, and we continued the Speed Mentoring session which was fast-paced and well-received.

Special thanks to the meeting planning committee, speakers, and Breakfast and Speed mentors for your contributions to the meeting. Lastly, PLEASE consider bringing a friend, mentor, or mentee back with you next year - the more the merrier!

Region VIII

Regions VII and VIII hosted their annual meeting February 11-13, 2017 in New Orleans during the Southern Regional Societies Meeting.  In addition to original science and clinical case presentations, the meeting included two APA-sponsored workshops.  "Let's Get Social:  Being an Advocate in the Digital World," was presented by Rachel Dawkins (Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital), Lisa Costello (West Virginia University), Elizabeth Meade (Swedish Medical Center), and Jennifer Wolford (University of Pittsburgh), and "Micro to Macro Teaching in the Busy Clinical Setting" was presented by Kim Hoang, Sarah Denniston, and Adam Wolfe (Baylor College of Medicine and the Children's Hospital of San Antonio).  We were very pleased to have Sue Bostwick, APA president-elect, join us during our meeting this year to share an update on current APA activities.  We also enjoyed networking and an update on CORNET by Paul Darden (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center) during our APA breakfast.  Regions VII and VIII gave joint awards for the best case presentations at the Pediatric Clinical Case Symposium.  The following awards were given:

Region IX & X

Dear Region IX and X APA Members,

Thank you to all who came out for the annual Region IX & X APA meeting in Monterey, California in early February.  This year's meeting was well attended by 80+ physicians and trainees.  The meeting proved to be a lively one with excellent oral abstract presentations plus roundtable discussions of both scientific abstracts and works in progress.

The keynote addresses this year were both insightful and informative.  We heard from Dr. Lisa McLeod on how to translate QI into impact on patient care through effective dissemination and implementation. Dr. Alan Schroder spoke about "safely doing less," reminding us to continually evaluate our medical management choices to minimize patient harm and avoid overdiagnosis/overtreatment. Our four invited workshops covered a variety of essential topics: Intro to Survey Design, Fun with Logistic Regression, Engaging Digital Learners, and Strategies for Teaching Humanism.

We also had the privilege of honoring four trainees with the Paul C. Young, MD Trainee Research Award
Award. The award recognizes the top scoring trainee original research abstracts at the region meeting.  Congratulations to the recipients: Michael Bentz, Laura Chappell-Campbell, Chelsea Garnett, and Sara Pavitt!

Lastly, we are looking forward to networking with you all again at PAS in San Francisco. Continuity

For those of you who are coming to San Francisco, don't forget to wear flowers in your hair (Scott McKenzie), or at least come to the great offerings sponsored by the Continuity Special Interest Group.  You will absolutely love the main course, our annual Continuity SIG meeting, and for a delightful dessert, our workshop, Continuity Boot Camp: Basic Training for Continuity Clinic Faculty.

Our Continuity SIG meeting will take place on Saturday, May 6, from 8:30-11:30, the first day of PAS.  After a few key updates on the RRC, news about CORNET and a status report on our best practices Delphi project, we will explore some relevant topics about teaching and learning in the continuity setting.  Continuity is more than well child care, learning takes place in more places than the conference room, and education is framed by more than the curriculum.  We will discuss these topics, with participants sharing some of their best innovations.  After small group reports, we will finish with our always popular Quick Conti Consults.

The workshop, Continuity Boot Camp: Basic Training for Continuity Clinic Faculty will take place on Sunday, May 7, from 12-3. This workshop is designed to meet the needs of both new continuity faculty and those of more experienced continuity faculty, as well as leaners, who want to enhance their skills.  We surveyed members of our SIG to identify core topics that faculty wanted to know more about to improve their continuity education and chose the four most popular topics to discuss in the workshop.  After reviewing the purpose and RRC requirements for the continuity experience in residency education, participants will have a chance to share their own innovative ideas in presenting their continuity education.  Two small group sessions will allow participants to discuss and explore four topics: curriculum development, faculty development, evaluation of residents, and practice management.  A summative large group session will be held and a toolkit with topic-related and general resources will be provided.  Throw in the opportunity to participate in a scholarly work and you have a great experience!  Lots to learn and we guarantee that you will have lots of fun.

So please plan to join us. You may leave your heart in San Francisco, but you'll return home with a lot of useful information and tools to make your continuity education "golden."

Health Literacy

Come join us for the Health Literacy Special Interest Group (SIG) at the upcoming 2017 PAS meeting in San Francisco in May!

This year our Health Literacy SIG meeting will have a special guest speaker, Dr. Benard Dreyer! Many of you know him as the former president of the APA and AAP, but he is also a tireless advocate for health literacy, childhood literacy, and poor and underserved populations. He will share his perspectives on future directions and needs with respect to health literacy from the research, advocacy, and education perspectives. During the meeting, interactive work groups will plan the next research, education, and practice priorities. This year, participants are encouraged to bring in specific examples of interventions in research, education, and practice; we hope that by sharing individual solutions we can generate a common understanding of current efforts in the field.

As we have each year, we will be sharing with you a "Health Literacy Guide to PAS" via email, as well as posting it on the APA wiki page. We welcome ideas from all of you regarding the topics you would most be interested in concentrating on as part of the Health Literacy Special Interest Group, as we seek to advance our goals in research, education, and practice! We hope to see you in San Francisco!

Hospital Medicine
  • Please join us at the Hospital Medicine SIG meeting at PAS on Monday, May 8th from 8:30-11:30am -This year's SIG meeting will be a joint session between the HM and Patient and Family-Centered Care SIGs titled "Engaging Patients and Families in Hospital Care."

As clinicians, we strive to not only provide care for and communicate with patients but to also incorporate families of our patients into everything we do. As such, it is important to meaningfully engage patients and families in hospital care and processes; however, accomplishing this can be challenging. We are planning to specifically address 4 topic areas: patient/family engagement in family-centered rounds, patient/family engagement in hospital safety, using technology to engage patients and families in the hospital setting and family-centered transitions of care from hospital to home. The session will include an opportunity to interact with and learn from experts in hospital medicine who have found ways to successfully engage patients and families in hospital care. We encourage all hospitalists and others interested in patient/family centered care to join us!

We will also have a "Business Portion" of the SIG meeting where we will have the opportunity to hear from representatives from the ABP PHM Sub-board and education task force.

Given the rapid progression of the field of PHM over the past few years and the recent approval for PHM to become a board certified specialty through the ABP, the three sponsoring organizations of PHM (including the APA, the AAP and the Society of Hospital Medicine) have formed the Consortium of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (CPHM) to provide a unified home for PHM and its key stakeholders. The APA Hospital Medicine Co-Chairs are members of the CPHM and will represent the interests of the APA Hospital Medicine SIG membership within the group.

LGBTQ Health and Well Being

8:45 - 9:45:  Gender-Nonconforming Children and Youth:  Innovations in Treatment and Research
Diane Ehrensaft PhD - Mental Health Director of the UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center Clinic
As a result of the increasing demand of children, youth, and their   families for care related to their gender diverse development, and in response to social and political actions that stand to harm this vulnerable population of youth, a group of international experts in the fields of medicine, mental health, education, and law formed a consortium to consolidate a gender affirmative model for interdisciplinary pediatric gender care.  The model is based on the premise that gender variations are a healthy component of human development and that optimal care of gender-nonconforming children and their families involves an interdisciplinary team approach.  This presentation reports on the evidence based research that contributed to the current status of this model, focusing on its underlying theory and basic tenets, goals of treatment, and practice implementation. Using a clinical case example from the UCSF Child and Adolescent Gender Center Clinic, the audience will have an opportunity to see this model in action and determine if it would be applicable to implement in their home institutions.

Since the landmark US Supreme Court marriage equality decision in 2015, states have seen an influx in proposals that threaten the health, well-being, and family and social relationships of LGBTQ youth and LGBTQ parents and their children.  Bills and policies to deny access and accommodation to LGBTQ people, promote conversion therapy, challenge adoption rights and foster parenting, and isolate transgender students were seen in 2016.  But progress continues to be made too.  Protections for LGBTQ students against bullying, bans on conversion therapy, and nondiscrimination in health care and family leave laws are advancing.  Join us for a closer look at what’s happening and learn what you can do to make a difference.

Pediatric Clinical Research Networks

The Pediatric Clinical Research Networks Special Interest Group (PCRN SIG) will be meeting at PAS from 8:30 – 11:30 on Saturday morning, May 6th in the Marriott Marquis, Sierra Suite I.

The PCRN SIG is a forum for PAS members who either are involved in or are planning to establish clinical research networks (defined as enduring multi-site clinical research collaborations).  Representatives of a diverse group of primary care (PBRNs), specialist, and disease-specific networks meet to discuss common challenges and potential solutions to those challenges, offer consultation to those planning or launching new networks, and hear other news on topics of interest to network researchers.

This meeting will feature presentations on two new networks.  Drs Christine Turley of the University of South Carolina, Robert Annett of the University of Mississippi and Paul Darden of the University of Oklahoma will present on the IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network (ISPCTN) network .  Dr Christina Olson of Children's Hospital Colorado will present on the Standardized Pediatric Research on Outcomes and Utilization of TeleHealth (SPROUT) network.  After each presentation, attendees will offer consultation to the presenters on starting and building research networks.
In addition, we will have sessions on:

  • Using a single IRB for multi-centered trials:
    • Rachel Sak, RN, MPH, Elena Hoskin, MPH CCRA and Nate Buscher will present  UCSF’s Biomedical Research Acceleration, Integration, and Development (BRIAD) program
    • They will be joined by John Finkelstein, MD of Boston Children’s Hospital in a discussion about implementing this new rule.

  • Internetwork collaborations featuring :
    • Karen Wilson, MD of Pediatric Research in Inpatient Settings (PRIS)

Qualitative Research

We are pleased to announce a joint meeting of the Qualitative Research SIG and the Medical Student Education SIG at PAS, to bring together researchers and educators with a focus on medical student education related research questions. This combined SIG will be on Sat May 6, 2017 at 8:30am in the Sierra Suite H at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco. Practical examples from the medical student education literature that employ qualitative research methods will be used to provide background. Participants are welcome to bring their ideas and works in progress for work in facilitated small groups to share areas that participants are pondering or struggling with as well as possible ways to address the struggles. We offer skill building stations for participants to gain experience: 1) developing research questions pertaining to key topics in medical student education that can be answered through qualitative research methods, and 2) hands-on experience in analysis (introduction to coding).

Research Scholars Program Graduates Its Second Cohort

Twelve scholars will graduate from the Research Scholars Program at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting in May. Congratulations to this year's graduating scholars: Jessica Bettenhausen, Eric Coon, Jenniver Ehrhardt, Nora Emara, Elizabeth Halvorson, Justin Josephsen, Laura Kair, Alisa Khan, Jaspreet Loyal, Kimberly Randell, Alyssa Silver, and Omolara Uwemedimo.

These scholars have completed a three-year program that includes a day-long series of workshops each year at the PAS meeting and a three-year series of large group webinars, small group discussions and assignments. Each scholar has gained the skills needed to design, implement, seek funding for and publish qualitative and quantitative research, as well as skills needed for professional development. Each scholar has also successfully completed a mentored research project. The Society of Pediatric Psychology

The Society of Pediatric Psychology (American Psychological Association Division 54) aims to promote the health and psychological well being of children, youth, and their families through science and an evidence based approach to practice, education, training, advocacy, and consultation.

Areas of expertise within the field include, but are not limited to: psychosocial, developmental and contextual factors contributing to the etiology, course and outcome of pediatric medical conditions; assessment and treatment of behavioral and emotional concomitants of illness, injury, and developmental disorders; prevention of illness and injury; promotion of health and health-related behaviors; education, training and mentoring of psychologists and providers of medical care; improvement of health care delivery systems and advocacy for public policy that serves the needs of children, adolescents, and their families.

The Division sponsors the Society of Pediatric Psychology Annual Conference (SPPAC, http://www.societyofpediatricpsychology.org/node/679) with 700+ members in attendance, and hosts two well respected Journals: The Journal of Pediatric Psychology and Clinical Practice in Pediatric Psychology. Members are a rich resource for research collaboration with pediatrician and other medical colleagues, and expertise covers the range of pediatric populations in general as well as specialty areas (with 19 current Special Interest Groups reflecting various medical issues such as Hematology-Oncology, Adherence, Obesity, Allergic Diseases, etc).
